Do you have to go to school to be a cake decorator?

Like do you have to take classes and stuff or can you just start doing it on your own?

Details:

  1. It would be best to go to school but if you are talented, buy the equipment and lots of books. That will help tremendously.
  2. Well, in all honesty, not really. That is, if you have an enormous talent for it. Meaning you are pretty damn good, and others have recognized it. It would be wise to at least obtain a certificate or some sort of licensure to prove you are "professional" at what you do.
  3. My friend is a cake decorator (in high school, minimum wage) at a bakery at the grocery store. If you wanted a job fancier than that you'd probably want to go to a 2 year culinary program.
  4. Unfortunately self acquired talents are not much recognised. You need papers, certificates to say that you are good or excellent. Go to some culinary schools, get a certificate and then go a head. Good Luck.
  5. If you are just starting out and do not choose to go to a conventional school, you can take local classes in your area. Check Michael's, or JoAnnes if you have one of these stores in your area, they hold cake decorating classes often. You can also contact Wilton in Chicago (www.wilton.com) they may have a list of people who hold classes of this type. You can also check the community colleges that have courses available without having to commit to a school schedule. They are usually held on weekends or at night. When I got out of the service, I found a great International bakery and went in to ask if the owner could teach me to make beautiful cakes like he had in the window. It so happens that there was a program that allowed him to take on an apprentice and the city paid for most of the salary. Try this, get a little creative. If you really want to be a cake decorator. You will find a way to make it happen.
