  25. How do I tell my boss no?

I work for a Baskin Robins/Dunkin Donuts as an Asst Manager and cake decorator. Recently we've had 3 girls out and my boss expects more and more of me, and I cannot handle it anymore. He has me running to other stores doing another cake decorators job because she says she can't handle it with all the hours she's been pulling. Everyday I give in and do the work but I really want to be able to say no. I just don't know how to go about it, and I'm afraid if I tell him no that he will mistreat me like he always does when I "let him down". HELP! I've been with the company for 6 years....

  26. Need opinion from fellow cake decorators--Can I do it?

I've been debating on making cakes from home. I don't think as a fulltime thing, but something on the side. I work at a bakery in a grocery store, and I practiced and practiced for 2 years. One of my coworkers out of nowhere decided she wanted to work mornings and be a decorator, so my boss gave it to her first cuz she was "there first" even though I wanted it first and had already learned all the skills!! She's been doing it for months now and I'm still faster and better. I have the passion and interest, and she doesn't! Plus her cultural differences make her put ugly colors together and her cupcakes are a joke-- pink icing and footballs? Spiderman on orange cupcakes? And mixes picks like Hello Kitty and Transformers????? Sorry, ranting. Anyway I'm wondering how hard is it to work from home? Or also, how does one land a job in a specialty bakery? I cry about this stuff sometimes when I get on YouTube and watch too many cake videos. What's been done at work pains me and I just want to persue my passion. I'm starting to think if I want to do that, I need to go out on my own and make it happen. (But I need this job obviously, plus in this economy, good jobs are hard to come by. I've been there for 5 years.) Thanks guys. Yeah I have a coworker who got transfered to our store who is taking culinary classes. She wants to open a catering business I think back home in New York (or around there). She's so lucky... all I really want or need are the everyday kind of skills and learning that you can only get by, well, doing it every day. Which is why I'm so mad that my other coworker gets to decorate and get that experience, yet she has no real finer skills. She has no desire or passion like I do. I was thinking about using some of my tax refund money and getting a KitchenAid stand mixer. Mmmm...... :) :)

There is a lot more to this story, so check out the link! By Richard Marosi and Anna Gorman, Los Angeles Times May 25, 2010 Reporting from San Diego In this palm-lined seaside neighborhood, Michel Malecot is known for dishing out the tasty baguettes, pastries and wedding cakes that have made his French Gourmet restaurant a fixture for 31 years. But when federal authorities raided his eatery, they discovered that his recipe for success included a staff of illegal immigrant workers from Mexico — pastry chefs, bakers and cake decorators, some of whom had worked the ovens for 15 years. more: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/immigration/la-me-imm-gourmet-20100525,0,2927377.story

  42. Job suggestions for a teen that wants little or no customer interaction?

I'm a 19 year old currently attending college (film major). I have a job as a cake baker/decorator, but I get very few hours and am looking to get a second part-time job. I need something that deals with few, if any, customers. I've had jobs as a salesperson, a cashier, a waitress.....I just can't handle it (I'm a sensitive introvert, unfortunately) due to the massive amount of rude customers . It doesn't matter how friendly you are, some of them can still be so cruel and it terrifies me! The only jobs that I've had that I've ever really enjoyed was as a stocker and a cook. So, for someone who wants more "behind the scenes" work or very little customer interaction, what would be a good part-time job choice? I love working both alone and in groups. Would places such as a movie theater (projectionist?) or Starbucks be a bad idea? Should I just look for another stocking or cooking job? Low pay rates are fine. Thanks for suggestions and, please, serious answers only! =]

I want to leave but keep thinking of our son. I looked up an apartment that I might be able to afford a couple of weeks ago. Well they sent me an email about first month being free. Is this my sign that I should leave? I have been with my fiancé for 4 yrs. We, well he bought a house (my name not on house) and opened up a successful business. I stayed home raising our son for the first year. I recently just stared a job as a Cake decorator. Pay not great but I can try and make it work. I’m just so lost and confused on what to do. I've suggested counseling. But he thinks it stupid and a waste of money. HELP
